Volunteers Help Residents Beat the Heat

Monday, July 1, 2024
Volunteers gather for UWTC's Day of Action, the official launch of our Beat the Heat program.

When Charisma Patterson signed up to volunteer for UWTC's Day of Action, she wanted to help her community, but she never anticipated how deeply the experience would touch her.

“I know of United Way. People hear what you do, but to experience, to give, to help, to volunteer, it is different when you are here to say that I was helping put air conditioning in this person’s home,” said Charisma. “It makes me feel good inside to know that I took time out of my day to better someone else’s life in my own community.”

Her words captured the essence of what the Beat the Heat program is all about—bringing relief, comfort, and hope to those in need.

On UWTC’s annual Day of Action on June 21, the third annual Beat the Heat program launched to provide portable A/C units to older adults, people with disabilities and veterans. Over 24 volunteers came together to distribute 54 A/C units to Tarrant County residents.

Among the volunteers was Tiara Brownlee from CarMax Arlington/Fort Worth, who, like Patterson, found the experience deeply rewarding.

“People are incredibly happy. Everyone is smiling, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company,” Brownlee remarked. “Witnessing these individuals receive care from those who truly care warms my heart.”

UWTC greatly appreciates the support received for Beat the Heat from the amazing volunteers and generous donors, including Spartan Carrier Group, CarMax, Trademark Properties, United Healthcare and Central Market.

You, too, can help save lives this summer through our the Beat the Heat program. More than 190 Tarrant County residents have requested units, as of the end of June. Donations are needed to meet this growing need as local temperatures continue to rise. UWTC also is recruiting volunteers to deliver and install A/C units.
