Javier Huerta remembers the confusion he felt when he first entered the workforce and encountered the complex world of taxes. Growing up in a low-income household, he hadn’t been taught how to file taxes or that credits existed to help families like his own. For many, this lack of knowledge creates uncertainty about how to navigate the system.
When one of his professors introduced him to United Way of Tarrant County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Javier, who is majoring in finance and accounting at the University of Texas at Arlington, saw it as an opportunity to gain real-world experience in tax preparation while helping families in need.
VITA volunteers provide free tax preparation to households earning $67,000 or less. Since 2010, the program has filed more than 101,303 tax returns and saved residents $22 million in tax preparation fees. Volunteers assist clients in maximizing refunds to cover essentials such as rent, groceries and utilities while also connecting them with resources like financial coaching and workforce training.
Javier volunteered at the Arlington Human Services Center and Arlington’s East Library and Recreation Center during his first tax season. One of his most memorable experiences was helping a Spanish-speaking family. As the only volunteer at his site who could assist them, Javier guided the family through the entire tax process, ensuring they understood their return and could claim valuable credits.
“They were very, very grateful that I was there, translating and helping them out,” said Javier.
The experience not only helped Javier grow personally but also boosted his confidence professionally. After completing his first tax season with VITA, he secured two internships: one with R. Scott Schieffer, P.C. and another with Carr, Riggs & Ingram that allowed him to further develop his skills and gain a competitive edge in the job market.
“I was able to talk to tax managers in depth about helping others and filing taxes,” said Javier.
Now a senior at the University of Texas at Arlington, Javier is preparing to graduate and pursue a master’s degree in accounting. Despite his demanding schedule, he plans to return to VITA for another tax season. Helping families gain financial clarity and relief is something he finds deeply fulfilling.
VITA welcomes volunteers from all walks of life, including students, retirees and working professionals. Opportunities range from tax preparers to translators and greeters. Join Javier in making a difference by becoming a VITA volunteer. Learn more at unitedwaytarrant.org/VITA.
