FORT WORTH (Oct. 26, 2022) – The first annual Phoenix Festival, a free event to provide resources to residents in the 76104 ZIP code, will be held Saturday, November 12. The festival will include health screenings, vaccinations, workout sessions, a farmer’s market and children’s area. Additionally, visitors can watch performances by local artists and sample food from restaurants in the area.
The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Evans Avenue Plaza, 1050 Evans Avenue, in Fort Worth. The event, co-hosted by BRAVE/R Together and United Way of Tarrant County, is open to all Tarrant County residents.
“Despite the systemic hardships the residents in ZIP code 76104 have faced with severely limited healthcare and job access, they are persevering to create a stronger, healthier community by working together,” said Shawn Lassiter, founder and CEO of BRAVE/R Together. “With Phoenix Festival, we aim to further uplift these families, commemorate their progress and provide them with access to vital resources. The festival was inspired by a community on the rise, not through flames, but through hope and positivity, and will provide a beacon of hope by advancing healthcare justice and community joy.”
BRAVE/R Together currently is accepting donations of basic essentials such as socks, gloves, jackets, hand sanitizer, household products and baby products that will be distributed to individuals and families living in the historic Southside, Morningside, and Hillside neighborhoods. Founded in 2021 through a partnership with UWTC, BRAVE/R Together’s mission is to address racial disparities and inequities in 76104, based on a UT Southwestern study revealing the zip code to have the lowest life expectancy in Texas. Earlier this year, BRAVE/R Together granted nearly $110,000 to 13 local organizations working to address the community’s most extensive needs in education, healthcare, unemployment and housing.
