For some families, it’s an opportunity to pay off debts. For others, it’s a chance to save for a rainy day. Either way, you can help them get ahead by volunteering at one of our free tax preparation centers.
Greeters, intake specialists, tax preparers and other volunteers are still needed to staff income tax preparation centers around the county that are part of the United Way Earn Well financial stability initiative.
From January 21 through April 15, IRS-certified staff and volunteers will offer tax preparation assistance to help low-income working families claim all of the tax credits for which they are eligible. Tax credit dollars benefit the local economy while supplementing the families’ income as they work to increase their earnings. Volunteers also tell the families about other available services such as money management coaching and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
During the last tax season, more than 4,300 families received $8.7 million in tax refunds, including $3.37 million in Earned Income Tax Credit refunds and $2.4 million in Child Tax Credits. Two hundred families opted to purchase savings bonds with some of their refund money.
Volunteers are asked to work at least one shift a week for six weeks. Shifts are available for various times, and training is provided.
