In Fort Worth this is the annual Mayor’s Week of Compassionate Service (MayorsWeekOfService.com) and United Way is participating once again. Friday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., we will be accepting donations of new clothing and children’s books (ages birth-9) in our Board Room at 1500 N. Main, Suite 200.
The books will be distributed at the March 5 Wild About Reading event to foster a love of reading and encourage families to start home libraries.
Clothing items, including t-shirts, socks and underwear in all sizes for men, women and children, are needed for area homeless shelters.
You also can write thank you notes to veterans Friday at stations set up in the United Way Board Room. United Way has already sent more than 900 appreciation cards to veterans here in our community and to active service members overseas. The cards have been prepared by elementary and high school students, Scout troops, United Way donor companies and individual community volunteers.
A donation given to United Way last fall also makes it possible for United Way to send a box every month to a soldier on the front lines. The boxes contain items such as snacks, socks, sunscreen, personal hygiene items and puzzle books. The service members’ addresses are provided by the organization “Adopt A US Soldier.” United Way recently received a Christmas card from a military chaplain whose troop in the Middle East received a box during the holidays.
