2017 KERNEL LIVE!

Join us for an event inspired by the TV show Shark Tank, where our 4 finalists will pitch creative solutions to critical social issues before judges and a live audience in the Four Day Weekend improvisational group theater. Judges will listen and decide who will get seed money of $10,000 or more from United Way of Tarrant County’s KERNEL program designed to foster social innovation within the community. 

General admission KERNEL LIVE! tickets will be available at the door for tonight’s event.

MEET OUR FINALISTS:

CENTER FOR TRANSFORMING LIVES

FIRED UP!

Addresses poverty by eliminating barriers and teaching employment skills to homeless women, especially those with limited skills, spotty work histories or criminal backgrounds. The goal of this social enterprise is empower homeless women with experience and skills to gain employment.

THE PALACE OF AUTISM

SUMMER PROGRAM

A 10-week summer academic enrichment program in Arlington/Mansfield for youth ages 10-16 with developmental disabilities, with a focus on serving autistic spectrum youth. By providing a safe space for children with special needs to go and thrive, the program hopes that parents will feel supported and empowered.

TKO BOXING

CLUB SPRING PROGRAM

Provides at-risk young ladies boxing training and technique, boxing discipline, academic tutoring, and leadership skills. This non-contact program is the first “all-girls” boxing club in Tarrant County seeks to inspire health, wellness, self-esteem and character.

ALLIANCE FOR CHILDREN

THE MAKEOVER PROJECT

Provides room makeovers for children who experience abuse in their home living environment. The program is designed to re-invent the physical space that children may have been abused in to reduce long-term trauma and promote healing in a new safe space.

TAKE A LOOK BACK AT THE 2016 KERNEL LIVE! EVENT

United Way of Tarrant County is thrilled to have delivered an evening to remember with the inaugural KERNEL LIVE! event on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. This unique event was the result of cross sector collaboration to advance social innovation, entrepreneurship and positive impact to the community. KERNEL LIVE! combined social innovation and improvisational comedy to create an engaging and entertaining evening for the audience, judges and finalists.

DREAM OUTSIDE THE BOX

DREAM DELIVERED

 

Dream Outside the Box was the top awardee receiving $15,000 for Dream Delivered, a program that delivers career exploration boxes to children living in what Founder and “Chief Executive Dreamer” Kam Phillips calls “dream deserts.”

PRESBYTERIAN NIGHT SHELTER

CLEAN SLATE PROGRAM 

 

Presbyterian Night Shelter’s new Clean Slate program, a group of social enterprises that provides employment for the homeless, was awarded $10,000. The Clean Slate also earned the Fort Worth Weekly People’s Choice Award, based on audience voting after all of the finalists presented. The award included an in-depth feature article in an upcoming issue of the publication and tickets to the upcoming 2016 Margarita Ball.

WHAT IS KERNEL?

The social challenges our community faces – violence (both neighborhood and domestic), poverty, access to affordable housing, an aging population – are all incredibly complex and interrelated. United Way of Tarrant County’s new social innovation fund, KERNEL, has the primary purpose of making significant changes in key community issues by working with a cross-sector of people, organizations, non-profits, for-profits and entrepreneurs to solve problems!

FOUR DAY WEEKEND

Critically-acclaimed comedy group Four Day Weekend is the longest-running show in the southwest. On Fridays and Saturdays, the group performs a one-hour and forty-five minute show created from audience suggestions and participation at their 212-seat theater in downtown Fort Worth. Voted Best Comedy, Four Day Weekend is a Fort Worth institution. They’ve been called “Fort Worth’s Greatest Ambassadors”, have been awarded the Key to the City, and have performed for two U.S. presidents and delivered a keynote address to the United States Congress. No trip to Fort Worth is complete until you attend this award-winning show!
