United Way mourns the Feb. 11 passing of Jim Nichols: civic leader, esteemed civil engineer and longtime leader of the Freese and Nichols consulting firm. Mr. Nichols chaired the United Way campaign in 1983, surpassing all previous campaigns by raising $14,162,408. In 1984 he served as chair of the United Way Board of Directors. Under Mr. Nichols’ leadership that year, United Way completed its fifth year of a pioneering long-range strategic business plan, becoming the first major United Way in the nation to do so. United Way also was recognized nationally that year for its Fort Worth Human Services Needs Assessment and its innovative campaign techniques. We will always appreciate Jim Nichols for the time and talent he contributed to United Way’s achievements.
