Our 4th Annual Health Symposium

KNOWLEDGE TO ACTION: UNIFYING HEALTH LITERACY EFFORTS IN TEXAS

The purpose of this year’s symposium was to unify health literacy efforts throughout Texas. The goal was to leverage the knowledge gained from the prior three symposia to unify statewide efforts towards health literate healthcare. Attendees emerged as champions to unify health literacy efforts across the state.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER Cindy Brach, M.P.P.

Cindy Brach, M.P.P., is a Senior Health Policy Researcher at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). She conducts and oversees research on health literacy, cultural and linguistic competence, quality improvement, Medicaid, and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. Cindy leads AHRQ’s health literacy activities, coordinating the Agency’s work in developing measures,

improving the evidence base, and creating implementation tools. Cindy’s health literacy projects have included the development of the AHRQ Health Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkit, CAHPS® Item Sets for Addressing Health Literacy, AHRQ Informed Consent and Authorization Toolkit for Minimal Risk Research, and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT). She serves on the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Literacy, where she led the effort to define the attributes of a health literate organization.
