THREE LIVES CHANGED

Your continued support can help even more people.

A few years ago, we introduced you to Beyoncia, Miguel and Lisa- three incredible people with incredible stories, all here in Tarrant County. We’d like to provide you with an update on these Three Lives Changed through YOUR SUPPORT of United Way.

HEALTH:

LISA

Lisa learned skills through the United Way-funded REACH program that helped her care for her mother. Eventually her mother lost the battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Lisa began researching ways to prevent Alzheimer’s in herself and children. When research pointed toward diet, she lost over 80 pounds. In March 2016, Lisa learned she had breast cancer. Her oncologist said that, through her diet, Lisa had been fighting cancer long before she knew she had it. Lisa is in remission now, convinced her mother was watching over her and helping save her life.

EDUCATION:

BEYONCIA

Beyoncia’s mom was afraid for her daughter’s future until Beyoncia met College and Career Coach Annette Cummings at a United Way GO Center. Today Beyoncia is a high school junior with recent awards from JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps). She stays busy with a part-time job and is focused on majoring in nursing and minoring in business at a historically black college or university. “I am very proud of her,” says her mother.

INCOME:

MIGUEL

Miguel was a plumber’s helper at Polk Mechanical Company, but his supervisor believed in Miguel’s potential and encouraged him to advance professionally. With help from a United Way-funded GED preparation class, Miguel passed the GED exam, enabling him to take the plumber’s licensing exam and get his plumber’s license. His employer immediately put Miguel into a foreman training program. The happy update to Miguel’s story is that today he is indeed a plumbing foreman—and still working at the same company that believed in him from the beginning.
