United Way’s Care for Caregivers project uses two evidence-based programs to help
older adults with mid-stage Alzheimer’s remain at home with the support of family caregivers.
Our program has a goal of less than 20% of its participants being placed in a nursing home
within 6 months. We also measure success by the extent we are able to improve a family
caregiver’s capacity for self-care. The Care for Caregivers program creates significant medical
cost savings and frees up emergency department resources for other types of emergencies.
Taxpayers also benefit by not subsidizing the costs of new hospitalizations
for those with a low or fixed income.
