An estimated 20,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s Disease in Tarrant County.

An estimated 40% of their caregivers will die before the individuals they care for.

Our Care for Caregivers program provides support for the people who take care of loved ones with ongoing health concerns. Programs included are: REACH II and Respite Care.

United Way’s Care for Caregivers project uses two evidence-based programs to help
older adults with mid-stage Alzheimer’s remain at home with the support of family caregivers.
Our program has a goal of less than 20% of its participants being placed in a nursing home
within 6 months. We also measure success by the extent we are able to improve a family
caregiver’s capacity for self-care. The Care for Caregivers program creates significant medical
cost savings and frees up emergency department resources for other types of emergencies.
Taxpayers also benefit by not subsidizing the costs of new hospitalizations
for those with a low or fixed income.

It’s important to take care of caregivers so they can take care of their loved ones. United Way and its partners provide these services:

  • REACH II (Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer’s Caregiver Health)

Through this free program, you can receive six months of one-on-one education and support from a qualified, caring professional to help you care for your loved one—and yourself. You’ll learn how to manage stress and depression, enlist the help of others, and how to respond when dementia causes troublesome behavior. You also will be connected with other resources to enable you to keep your loved one at home as long as possible. REACH II is provided by the Alzheimer’s Association – North Central Texas Chapter.

  • Respite Care

Respite care is short-term care that enables you take regular breaks from the physical demands and stress of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease at home. An experienced and licensed caregiver can come to your home six hours a week for six months to provide companionship for your family member while you relax for a while or run errands. There is a minimal hourly fee based on your ability to pay. Respite care is provided by Easter Seals North Texas.

  • Stress-Busting for Family Caregivers

This free nine-week program teaches caregivers how to manage stress. Join a small group of caregivers for 90-minute sessions that will help you relax and cope with challenging situations. Offered through United Way’s Area Agency on Aging.
