Tax credits change lives. Income tax season is almost here, and you can help low-income working families get their refundable tax credits by volunteering at a United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) center as a greeter, interpreter, intake specialist or tax preparer.
The Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit help low-income working families keep more of what they earn; enabling them to pay for basics like child care, food, and transportation, and to save for the future.
In 2015, VITA volunteers helped local families receive $5.2 million in Earned Income Tax Credits and almost $12 million in tax refunds overall.
“I began volunteering with VITA 6 years ago and found it to be rewarding for those I prepare taxes for and myself. The taxpayers are so grateful for your assistance,” said Joel Crenshaw. “I feel a great sense of satisfaction when I complete their tax return.”
“Volunteering with VITA allows me to give back to society,” said Mike O’Dell, another VITA volunteer. “I am a retired engineer. I have worked with numbers all my life. Some people get flustered when they try to work with numbers. Preparing taxes is an easy way for me to help less fortunate people or people with different talents.”
