Did you know that every year an estimated 5 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation? And for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, experts believe that as many as 23 go unreported?
At the United Way of Tarrant County’s Area Agency on Aging, it is our mission to be the visible leader and advocate in the creation and delivery of services that promote empowerment, independence and dignity for older citizens, persons with disabilities and caregivers. In honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we join others in raising awareness about this serious problem.
On Tuesday, June 14, there will be a proclamation at the Tarrant County Commissioners Court at 10 a.m., followed by a butterfly release in recognition of elder abuse victims and Tarrant County prevention efforts at 10:30 a.m. on the east side of the Tarrant County Courthouse. Thank you to the Fort Worth Safe Communities Coalition Elder Abuse Prevention Task Force and the Tarrant County Adult Protective Services Community Board for partnering to sponsor these events.
