Soaring temperatures and record electricity use have made the scorching summer of 2015 miserable—and even hazardous—for North Texans. United Way’s 2-1-1information and referral service has helped people by letting them know what help is available for heat-related problems.
From July 1 to August 20, 2-1-1 fielded 6,245 requests for assistance related to the heat. This was a 129% percent increase over the same period last year. Most of the calls—5,910 of them—were requests for assistance in paying electric bills. People also requested air conditioners and fans to help survive the brutal heat at home, or asked for the location of the nearest “cooling center” where they could escape the stifling temperatures for a while. The 201 requests for air conditioners increased 265% over last year.
Calls for heat-related assistance rose to become 17% percent of all requests to 2-1-1 during July 1 to August 20 time period. Last year the total number of heat-related requests represented only 6% of the total requests to 2-1-1 during that time.
