United Way’s Earn Well financial stability initiative is recruiting volunteers to distribute 10,000 packets to households in low-income neighborhoods of Fort Worth and Arlington. Each package will contain information (in English and Spanish) on United Way-funded services that can help families increase their income and manage their money more effectively.

Volunteers will gather at 8:30 a.m. December 3 in the parking lots outside the United Way offices at 1500 N. Main in Fort Worth and 401 W. Sanford in Arlington for a continental breakfast and brief orientation. Everyone will receive United Way t-shirts, the information packets and specific distribution areas that can be covered in a few hours. Volunteers will work in small teams and drive themselves to their assigned areas.

The door hanger packets will provide information about three free services:

Free Tax Help: Free tax help from IRS-certified tax preparers at United Way-supported tax preparation centers helps families who make less than $50,000 get all the refunds for which they qualify.
• Last tax season more than 2,800 free tax returns were completed through the tax assistance program.
• This resulted in more than $5 million in total returns and earned income tax credits coming back to struggling working families and our local community.

Free Job Skills: United Way funds free job training that can help people get work or obtain higher-paying jobs. Training includes certification in such areas as forklift operation and oil and gas production.
• During the last year 124 individuals enrolled in vocational programs, skills enhancement training and college courses, while 289 enrolled in adult literacy programs to improve their basic skills.

Money School: United Way funds classes that help people set financial goals, establish budgets, use credit wisely and save money for emergencies.
• During the last year more than 300 people completed a 12 ½ hour financial education course.
