Learn About Becoming an Education Volunteer

Woman Reading Book To ChildUnited Way of Tarrant County is recruiting volunteer readers, tutors, mentors and graduation coaches to be part of its Learn Well education initiative now underway in the Arlington, Birdville and Fort Worth independent school districts. If you would like to learn how you can help children and youth succeed in school and life, then plan to attend a training session for prospective volunteers on September 14. The free training will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and repeated from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at United Way’s Fort Worth office, 1500 N. Main.

During the training you will learn about the programs that make up United Way’s Learn Well education initiative, which is committed to 1,508 more graduations from United Way-selected schools by 2020. You’ll also be able to decide if you are better suited to:

  • Equip preschoolers to succeed in school
  • Provide elementary students with the reading skills needed to learn
  • Enable teens to prepare for college or a career

RSVP to RSVP@unitedwaytarrant.org by Friday, September 9, and include your name, phone number and the training time you will attend. Lunch will be provided for $6 during the first session.

You can make a difference in just a few hours a week as a United Way Learn Well education volunteer:

  • Volunteer Readers read stories to individual students or groups
  • Reading and Math Tutors work one-on-one with students, using materials designed to improve academic performance
  • Mentors connect with students beyond the classroom, providing advice, friendship and guidance on career options and other topics
  • Graduation Coaches focus on at-risk students, providing support and coaching to keep them from dropping out of school

United Ways across the nation have pledged to recruit a million education volunteers over the next three years in partnership with other community organizations. Locally United Way has enlisted more than a dozen groups to assist in signing up 3,000 Tarrant County volunteers to serve as mentors, tutors and readers.
