Read Across America Day

Cat In The Hat2 WebMarch 2 was Read Across America Day, a national day to motivate children and adults to read together. United Way was a partner in the initiative, which was established by the National Education Association to be observed on the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

“Research has shown that children who spend more time reading do better in school and life,” said Marilyn Jones, United Way Vice President of Resources Under Management and Regional Planning. “We encourage local organizations to hold reading events on Read Across America Day and urge all adults to read to the children in their lives every day.”

Clayton YES! Program Coordinator Michelle Bollinger (shown above) made appearances as Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat at Greenbrier Preschool and Tanglewood Elementary School for the afterschool program.

The ability to read well is a key component of United Way’s Learn Well education initiative dedicated to more on-time high school graduations. As part of Learn Well, United Way is helping the Fort Worth ISD provide tutoring three days a week to students who are not proficient readers in first through third grades at three elementary schools. The Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program underwritten locally by United Way mails free books monthly to children from birth to age 5 in Tarrant County ZIP codes that are home to many lower-income families.
