Education Volunteers

Wanted: 1,000,000 Education Volunteers to Help Kids Succeed

United Way of Tarrant County is joining United Ways across the nation in recruiting a million volunteer readers, tutors, mentors and graduation coaches. (Locally we have enlisted almost two dozen groups to assist us in signing up 3,000 volunteers over the next three years to help Tarrant County children succeed in school and in life.)

You can make a difference in just one or two hours a week:
• Volunteer Readers read stories to individual students or groups
• Reading and Math Tutors work one-on-one with students, using materials designed to improve academic performance
• Mentors connect with students beyond the classroom, providing advice, friendship and guidance on career options and other topics
• Graduation Coaches focus on at-risk students, providing support and coaching to keep them from dropping out of school

Woman Reading To Girl Newslet Story PicThis national three-year effort began March 31 in tandem with the release of a new United Way Worldwide publication called “Voices for the Common Good: America Speaks Out on Education.” The thoughts of Tarrant County residents are among those summarized in the 37-page report, which offers a range of perspectives on the challenges facing America’s children, schools and communities, plus ideas on how to transform the public education system and help all children achieve success.

United Way of Tarrant County held “community conversations” in Fort Worth, Arlington and Northeast Tarrant County. Comments from those sessions were combined with similar conversations in 16 other parts of the country to form the foundation of the report.
