HEB Transit

For Northeast Riders, HEB Transit Is The Way to Work
and Self-Sufficiency

Heb Transit Rider Glen Quetant 2011 March 001 WebWhen Hurricane Katrina turned Glen Quetant’s life upside down, he ended up living in Tarrant County. HEB Transit, a transportation service started with United Way seed money, helped Glen as he put his life back together again.

HEB Transit helps transportation-disadvantaged individuals in Hurst, Euless and Bedford get to work, job training, job interviews and other work-related destinations. It was started in August 2006 with $25,000 from United Way and is administered by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG). The American Red Cross Chisholm Trail Chapter operates the service.

Glen Quetant (shown at work in the photo) lives in Hurst and has been an HEB Transit customer since 2006. He depends on the service to get to his job at the Tuesday Morning store in Bedford. “I don’t drive, and there’s no public transportation in the area,” he said. “I work part-time because I get Social Security, and I couldn’t depend just on social security.”

HEB Transit ridership has steadily increased, providing 3,270 trips to about 100 riders during fiscal year 2010, compared to 1,800 trips the first year.

Hours of operation currently are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, but soon those hours will be increased. Thanks to a grant from Tarrant County, expanded late-night hours and Saturday service will start tentatively in May.

HEB Transit is a partnership involving NCTCOG, United Way, the cities of Hurst, Euless and Bedford, and numerous faith-based agencies. Besides the new county funding, other support comes from a federal grant, local project partners and the community.
